How do you make your Blog stand out among the millions (really!) of Blogs out there  For the purpose of this post, I attempted to find out how many Blogs exist world-wide.  I found a great many answers, none of them agreeing with each other.  A conservative guess (although it doesn’t sound conservative) is that there are more than 300 million (and growing) Blogs out there.  

Want proof?  Think of a topic.  Any topic at all.  Type it into a Google search field, and when the results come up, click on the word MORE on the left side of the Google page.  It will open up a dialogue box that has, among other things, the word BLOG in it.  Click on Blog, and see how many pages of blogs there are on your topic.   

Depressing?  It doesn’t have to be.  Done right, no matter how many others are spouting off  about your topic, you can still win your share (and that’s a lot!) of readers.  

You need to stand out… and I promise, while it is not easy, it is absolutely doable.  

First, let’s get things into perspective.  I would like to see a breakdown of those millions of Blogs.   I would guess that most of them—yes most!—are Blogs in name only.  By that I mean that someone had an idea for a Blog—or created one without an idea—got through the setup and posted once or twice before moving on to the next PS3 game.  Uphill Writing is my fourth Blog.  The other three are out there, somewhere, whimpering in the dark and cold, getting no updates and fewer than no reads.  

A certain—much smaller—group are active Blogs  These have (and this is a guess, let me remind you, but one I feel confident about) somewhere between 25 and 100 readers a day.  Not a great number of visits and page reads, but respectable.  

Then there are the big boys and girls.  These are the monetized, well-organized and well-oiled Blogs that get 1000 or more hits a day.  These people make money Blogging, and are becoming Internet personalities.  

Finally, there are the Internet Stars of Blogging, Perez Hilton, for example, who are mega-stars and are making millions.  Really.  (In 2008 he was making $40,000 per day in advertising.)  

As Bloggers we need to find our own niche, and to do that we need to make our Blog both compelling and accessible to our readers.  

Darrren Rowse at has these suggestions:   

  • Personalise your writing
  • Use ‘you’ language (it’s much more engaging and personal)
  • Tell stories (especially personal relatable ones)
  • Show photos (include some of yourself from time to time – it gives your blog a more personal touch)
  • Use singular language (make the person reading your blog feel like they have your complete focus)
  • Pretend you’re having a conversation with one person rather than giving a speech
  • Keep a level of informality
  • Make it accessible by using everyday words (don’t use big words to impress – write words that people use in everyday language)
  • Respond to individuals (in comments respond to individual comments, send emails to readers)
  • These are some great ideas, but they aren’t the only things we can do.
