A Musical Note: Talking Heads – Take Me to the River

Take Me to the River was written by Al Green, and Mabon “Teenie” Hodges, and originally recorded by Al Green as a track on his 1974 album, Al Green Explores Your Mind.

The song has been recorded by a number of artists including “Foghat” and Bryan Ferry (an artist we will speak of at a later time).

In my humble opinion, the best version of the song was done by Talking Heads.

I’m wondering if you will agree with me:

  1. It’s kinda got religious tones, like a cleansing in the river, so I appreciate the lyrics especially associated with love. But the music I did not find that inspiring.

  2. P.S. Just caught a bit of Al Green’s version. Think that is more ‘musical’. It flows better too. Sounds more like someone actually ‘speaking’ or singing if you prefer… more real…..
